The Overton window is a concept in political theory which takes in the possibilities for change that are realistic in the current environment.[1]

There are 5 steps:

  1. From Unthinkable to Radical.
  2. From Radical to Acceptable.
  3. From Acceptable to Sensible.
  4. From Sensible to Popular.
  5. From Popular to Policy.

The concept of the 'Overton Window' is a theory created by Joseph Overton from the Mackinac Center for Public Policy.[2]

The Overton Window has been used with great success by many on the Left.[3]
