Phonics sounds

Phonics sounds for certain letter combinations need to be memorized by beginning readers. Here is a growing list:

• "gu" - a hard "g" as in "guard", "guitar", "guide", "guarantee", "baguette"
• "ti" - the sound is "sh", as in "motion", "action", "ambitious", "partial", "cautious", and "potential"

• additional letter combinations that also produce the "sh" sound are: "sh", "ch", "ci", "si" and "ssi"
