Port Douglas is a coastal town, located approximately 40 miles north of Cairns, in Queensland, Australia. Located on the Cape York Peninsula, it was founded by Irish prospector James Venture Mulligan (1837-1907) in 1877. The town takes its name from politician John Douglas (1828-1904), who at that time was serving as premier of Queensland.
