Private street
A private street is a road which is owned entirely by private entities (e.g. an individual, a homeowners' association, or a corporation) who maintain and secure it, usually using a gate (with or without security personnel) or "no trespassing" sign to try to deny access by the public. As such, maintenance and improvements are not paid for by taxes, but are the responsibility of the owner(s).
Portland Place, St. Louis
Black Lives Matter protesters walked through the private street of Portland Place in St. Louis to reach the mayor's house on a public street on the other side. A couple who owned a home on that route considered their conduct to be trespassing and brandished firearms in self-defense.
In the international news coverage that ensued, liberals questioned the legitimacy of private streets in urban areas.[1]
Missouri has a Castle law to strengthen owners' rights but it is doubtful that extends to defense of private streets.
