A prop bet, short for "proposition bet," is a wager on a specific aspect of a sporting event rather than the overall outcome of a game. This is a big part of sports gambling addiction.

Examples of prop bets are how many yards a quarterback will throw in a game, or even something as minute as which side will score the initial down.

Prop bets are often on a particular performance by a specific player, which makes corruption inevitable and pervasive as a player can alter his individual performance to cause the bets to win for someone. An NBA player pled guilty to feigning an injury, for example, so that he would be removed from a game, as part of a gambling scheme.
