A question word, or interrogative word, is a word used to indicate that an utterance is a question. A question word can stand in for the requested information, e.g., John's location in the question "Where is John?" In some languages, such as Japanese, another kind of question word can be appended to a statement to turn it into a yes-or-no question.[1]
