Chapter 16

6	For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy.	They have spilled the blood of saints and prophets, and You have given them blood to drink, because they deserve it!"
7	And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.	I heard one from the altar saying, "Yes indeed, Lord God Almighty, your verdicts are true and just!"
8	And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.	The fourth poured out his vial onto the sun. The sun was then made capable of scorching men with fire.
9	And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory. 13	And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. 14	For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. 15	Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.	"Behold! I am coming like a Thief! Blessed is the one who stays alert, and keeps his clothes on, if he doesn't want to walk naked, and let people see him in a shameful condition!"
16	And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.	And he massed them in a place that is called in Hebrew, Armageddon.	Literally, הרמגדון (Har-mageddon), or the Valley of Megiddo. Napoleon Bonaparte, on surveying this valley during his travels in the Middle East, is rumored to have exclaimed that this would be a wonderful place to have a battle. It is a wide-open space with room to assemble an army larger than has ever before been assembled for a single battle. In fact, many other battles, often decisive battles in Egyptian and Israelite history, have been fought on this site. The British, in the days of Mandatory Palestine, built Ramat-David Air Force Base in this valley. Today that base is the largest and most important base of the Israeli Air Forces.
17	And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done.	And the seventh poured out his vial into the air. A great voice out of the temple, from the throne, said, "It is done!"
18	And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great.	Lightings, voices, and thunderclaps occurred, and a gret earthquake, such has not been felt since men walked this earth, so terrible was this earthquake.
19	And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.	The great city was split into three parts, and the cities of the Gentiles were destroyed. Babylon the Great came into the memory of God, Who lashed out at her in the full out-of-control fury of His magisterial indignation.
20	And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.	Every island was sunk, and the mountains could not be found.
21	And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great.	And a great hail fell out of the sky onto men. Every hailstone weighed roughly as much as a backpack-load. Men blasphemed God and blamed Him for the plague of the hail, because this plague was very, very great.	The literal Greek word is ταλεντον (talenton), the weight that a man could carry on his back. Any rock or hailstone weighing that much would deliver as much energy as would a nuclear device.

Chapter 17

Revelation presents frequent contrasts between good and evil sides. Just as there was a holy woman who fled into the wilderness (Revelation 12:6, 14), so also is there a woman in the wilderness who actively transgresses against God and persecutes His saints.
4	And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:	The woman was dressed in purple and scarlet, and decorated herself with gold and precious gemtones and pearls. She held a golden cup in her hand, full of detestable substances and the unclean products of her immoral acts.
5	And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.	On her forehead this name was written: "Secret, Babylon the Great, Mother of Harlots and of Detestable Things from the Earth."
6	And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.	I saw that this woman was intoxicated from the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. When I saw her, I got the shock of my life.	The literal Greek reads "wondered with a great wonder." Greek, like Hebrew, often repeats the same concept for emphasis, which is what it does here.
7	And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.	And the Messenger told me, "Why are you so shocked? I will tell you the secret of the woman, and of that seven-headed and ten-horned wild animal that's carrying her.
8	The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.	That wild animal you saw was alive, is now dead, and is about to rise out of the Abyss, and be on his way to utter ruin. They who are living on the earth, whose names are not written in the Book of Life from the foundation of the world, will be shocked and awed when they see this ravening animal who was alive, is now dead, and yet is still alive.
9	And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.	Here is where you need insight: The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman is sitting. They are also seven emperors.	In the original manuscripts, the phrase "seven kings" is part of this verse, not the one following.
10	And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.	Five of them have died, one is in power right now, and the other hasn't come to power yet, and when he does come to power, he'll remain in power only for a short while.	The Holy Roman Empire which ruled in supreme power from 538 to 1798, exactly 1,260 prophetic days/literal years, religiously claimed to be Christian but employed pagan rites. When the Apostle and Revelator John wrote these words in cir. 95–96 A.D., five pagan kingdoms were gone: Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Medo-Persia, and Greece. The one standing in his day was Pagan Rome, eventually to be succeeded by Constantinian proto-Papal Rome to briefly last from the fourth century until the Holy Roman Empire's rise in the sixth century solidified by the Code of Justinian granting supreme power to the Papacy. A pseudo-Futurist viewpoint among renegade historicists, particularly Adventists but also other Christians, contends that with the healing of the beast's wound (Revelation 13:3) corresponding to the Lateran Treaty of 1929 whereby Fascist Italy restored the Papal State, the five Popes starting at 1929 were the "five are fallen," John Paul II was the "is," and Benedict XVI was the "will continue a short space" because he resigned. This of course assumes that John's vision was looking into a time period between 1978 and 2005, the reigning period of John Paul II.
11	And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.	The ravening animal that was alive, and is now dead, is in fact the eighth emperor. He is one of the seven, and is on his way to perdition.	What does it mean that the eighth king is "of the seven"? The Holy Roman Empire's characteristics was borrowed from that of the previous seven: just as pagan Egypt and Assyria warred against Jews in the Old Testament and took them captive, so too did the beast from the bottomless pit persecute New Testament spiritual Jews with captivity. (Revelation 13:10) The religious ideology of the Holy Roman Empire was a syncretism of the philosophies from the fallen nations of Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, Rome, first incarnated in Constantinian Rome, the seventh king. So the eighth belongs to the seven because of its characteristics, attributes, and behavior: it is the successor and merger of the previous seven "kings."
12	And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast.	The ten horns you saw are ten heads-of-state, who have not yet received a state to run. They will receive authority as heads-of-state for one hour along with the ravener.	Some historicists, especially Adventists, argue that the "one hour" cannot be a time prophecy because allegedly no time prophecy corresponds to a time period after 1844. If their assumption is incorrect, then verse 17:12 implies ten kings/kingdoms at the end of time receive decibel power for 15 literal days.
13	These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.	They are unanimous, and will give their power and their authority to the ravener.
14	These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.	They will fight a war against the Lamb, and the Lamb will beat them. He is, after all, the Lord of lords, and King of kings, and His companions are called, and chosen, and faithful."
15	And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.	And he told me, "The waters you saw, where the harlot is sitting, are peoples, and crowds, and ethnic groups, and languages.	A key symbol: waters represent an area of densely crowded people.
16	And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.	The ten horns you saw on the ravener, will hate the harlot and render her desolate and naked. They will eat her flesh and burn her up.
17	For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.	Because God has put it into their hearts to accomplish His purpose, to forge an alliance, and to give their sovereignty to the ravener, until everything that God said would happen, does happen.
18	And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.	And the woman you saw is the great city that rules imperially over all the heads-of-state of the earth."	While the historicist school of eschatology traditionally identified the Papacy as the Whore of Babylon rather than the Antichrist as a kingdom, modern-day historicists frequently repeat the technically incorrect claim of the Papacy constituting the (entire) first beast of Revelation 13.

Chapter 18

After this, I saw another Messenger coming down from heaven, having great authority. The earth was made to shine with His glory.	This is probably yet another manifestation of Jesus Christ. Compare with: "And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not." (John 1:5)
2	And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.	And He cried with a loud voice: "Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great! She has become the dwelling place of demons, the dungeon of every unclean spirit, and a cage for every unclean and despicable bird!	The use of the aorist tense, repeated, suggests that the city will fall twice. Some manuscripts add "and a cage for every unclean beast."
3	For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.	All the ethnic groups have taken part in her wild orgies, and the heads-of-state of the earth have had sexual favors from her, and the merchants of the earth have grown rich through the addictive power of her sensual luxuries!"	Fornication is symbolically referential of idolatry against God. See Ezekiel, for instance.
4	And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.	I heard another voice out of the sky. It said, "Come out of her, My people, so that you will not be mixed up in her sins, and that you not receive any of her plagues!
5	For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.	Her sins have reached to the sky, and God has remembered her unjust dealings!
6	Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double.	Reward her the same way that she rewarded you, and pay her back doubled and redoubled according to her works. Fill her cup double-full!
7	How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.	To the extent that she glorified herself, and lived luxuriously, give her just as much torment and sorrow! She says in her heart, 'I sit as a queen, I am not a widow, and I will never be sorry'! (Isaiah 47:7–9) While Rev. 18:7 makes no direct mention of loss of children, the parallelism is indicative that the said characteristic/event is nonetheless implied. Compare with Rev. 2:23, where God warns of killing spiritual Jezebel's children. Parallelism? Could Babylon the Great be the same power as the Jezebel mentioned in the letter to the angel of the church in Thyatira?
8	Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.	For this reason, her plagues will come in one day, death, mourning, and famine. She will be burned up in fire, because the Lord God Who convicts her is mighty!
9	And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning,	The kings of the earth, her former clients who lived in luxury with her, will weep and mourn for her, when they see the smoke of her burning.

22	And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee;	The sound of harp-players, and musicians, and flutists, and trumpeters, will never be heard in you again! No craftsman, of whatever craft, will be found in you again, and the sound of a millstone will never be heard in you again.
23	And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.
