Roanoke Island is a coastal island of North Carolina, 12 miles long and 3 miles wide, and connected to the mainland by bridge. It is renowned as the location of the first English colony in North America, founded by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1585. Further colonists arrived in 1587, but an expedition of 1590 found no trace of the colonists; their fate has never been determined.
