Rural America

Rural America is an expression for the vast underpopulated regions of most of the United States. The term is often used in an idyllic manner about places that typically have lower crime and more conservative values than big cities.
Drug abuse and alcoholism, however, is as big a problem in rural America as in cities. A ranking of the states having the biggest drug abuse problems is led by some of the most rural states:[1]
Other rural states have the biggest drug problems in certain categories. Alabama leads in opioid addiction, Wests Virginia leads in drug overdose deaths, and Vermont leads in illegal drug use.[1]
