STOP ERA, standing for "Stop Taking Our Privileges: ERA," was a remarkably successful grassroots movement that prevented the so-called Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) from becoming part of the U.S. Constitution despite the support of ERA by both major political parties, virtually the entire media, and overwhelming majorities of Congress.

ERA was aggressively pushed by powerful Senator Ted Kennedy, Presidents Truman,[1] Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Johnson, President and Mrs. Richard Nixon, President and Mrs. Gerald Ford, President and Mrs. Jimmy Carter, and all major news outlets, and yet was defeated by a group of housewives led by Phyllis Schlafly.
