Shah Jahan (1592-1666; reigned 1628-1658) was the fifth Mughal emperor of India; he succeeded hhis father, Jahangir. Shah Jahan presided over a golden period of Mughal culture, and is especially remembered for his architectural monuments, including the Taj Mahal, which he had built as a mausoleum for his wife, the empress Mumtaz Mahal, the Jama Masjid (Friday Mosque) in Delhi and the Red Fort in Delhi. Shah Jahan was ousted from the throne in a rebellion by his son Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb imprisoned his father in the Red Fort at Agra; from the windows of his apartment in the fort Shah Jahan could see the Taj Mahal in the distance.
