Simferopol
Simferopol is the capitol city of the Republic of Crimea. It is located on the Salgir River.
In ancient times, it was the capital of the Scythian kingdom, Scythian Neapolis, located on the territory of the modern city.
World War II
From November 1, 1941 to April 13, 1944, Simferopol was occupied by Western troops from Germany and Romania. Mass killings of civilians began there. In total, during the period of the German-Romanian occupation, 22,600 people were killed in Simferopol and the vicinity of the city, several thousand more were taken to forced labor. Over 8,000 people were killed near the city of a concentration camp created by the Nazi forces on the territory of the Krasny state farm. During the hostilities and the Nazi occupation, the city was seriously damaged, 30% of the housing stock was destroyed here, the railway station was blown up, the equipment of all enterprises of the city was destroyed or removed.
