South Ossetia is an independent state in the Caucasus. While Russia, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Nauru and Syria do recognize South Ossetia as an independent state, the remaining countries regard it as a part of the Republic of Georgia.[1] Since the end of the Russo-Georgian War in 2008 South Ossetia, along with Abkhazia, could achieve greater sovereignty.
