I am from Puerto Rico, and although many liberals democrats supports statehood for PR, historically Republicans supported it. Puerto Rican liberals and leftists mainly opposes statehood for Puerto Rico.

Most of the support for Puerto Rican statehood in the 50 states is from liberal Democrats (maybe not historically, but currently), because everyone knows that if it becomes a state, it would be dominated by the Dems (Senate).
