I think that the media is so fascinated by Tiger Woods because of his sudden fall from incredible player to mediocre one because of an emotional upheaval. It seems likely that he will return to his former power. But even if he dosen't then he is still an interesting story.
Also, the media does not call him a favorite, he is just watched closely, as he is probably the biggest name in golf. (this reputation earned before his fall)
