Elrond is one of the [[Elf (Middle-earth)|Half-elven]], son of Eärendil and Elwing, born at the end of the [[First Age (Middle-earth)|First Age of the Sun]]. He chose a life as an Elf, whereas his brother Elros chose life as a mortal Man. Elrond founded the Elven settlement [[Rivendell]] in the [[Second Age (Middle-earth)|Second Age]], and became its Lord and Master. He fought in the War of the Last Alliance under the command of Gil-galad, who gave him the Ring [[Vilya]] for safekeeping. Elrond married Galadriel's daughter Celebrían at the beginning of the [[Third Age (Middle-earth)|Third Age]], with whom he fathered the twin sons Elladan and Elrohir, and the daughter [[Arwen]].
Toward the end of the [[Third Age (Middle-earth)|Third Age]], he became foster-father to [[Aragorn]]. Aragorn later fell in love with, and many years later was betrothed to, Elrond's daughter Arwen. Elrond presided over the Council which decided the fate of the [[One Ring (Middle-earth)|One Ring]], and chose the [[Fellowship of the Ring]] to accompany [[Frodo Baggins]] on his quest to Mount Doom. At the end of the Third Age, Elrond left Middle-earth for Valinor.
