Decline of atheism, further research: http://churchintoronto.blogspot.com/2012/01/atheism-in-decline.html

None of the articles that cited for the decline of atheism provided any surveys or peer-reviewable research that indicates that. Most studies that I have seen have said the exact opposite, that atheism is a growing global movement.  I think that this claim that atheism is on the decline is highly questionable and ought to be deleted until peer-reviewed surveys can show otherwise.

Looking at the sources cited for the apparent decline of atheism, these articles state figures but when I follow up these figures it does not lead anywhere or show how these statistics were gathered or what methodological approach they used, i.e. what do you consider atheist? Do non-theistic religions like Buddhism get considered atheistic? What about non-theistic Christians, are they considered atheists? What about people who are explicit "non-believers" but do not call themselves atheists? How many people were polled and what groups of people were polled?

Looking at the American Religious Identification Survey (2008) from Trinity College in Connecticut, it explicitly states in the summary that the number of Christians are declining while the number of non-believers are growing. http://b27.cc.trincoll.edu/weblogs/AmericanReligionSurvey-ARIS/reports/ARIS_Report_2008.pdf

I quote; "The American population self-identifies as predominantly Christian but Americans are slowly becoming less Christian.
  −
• 86% of American adults identified as Christians in 1990 and 76% in 2008.
  −
• The historic Mainline churches and denominations have experienced the steepest declines while the non- denominational Christian identity has been trending upward particularly since 2001.
  −
• The challenge to Christianity in the U.S. does not come from other religions but rather from a rejection of all forms of organized religion."
  −
  −
In concerns to the increasing number of atheists, I quote; "The U. S. population continues to show signs of becoming less religious, with one out of every five Americans failing to indicate a religious identity in 2008.
  −
• The “Nones” (no stated religious preference, atheist, or agnostic) continue to grow, though at a much slower pace than in the 1990s, from 8.2% in 1990, to 14.1% in 2001, to 15.0% in 2008."

Do you think this is just pseudo-science because it does not conform to a pre-existing ideological bias that desires Christianity to rise in the USA while Atheism declines?
