The Obama campaign has alternatively stated that the sentenced was poorly worded since he was not giving a scripted speech and that when Obama said "that" he was referring to roads and bridges. Obama points to a later portion of his speech in which he said, "The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together," to support his claim.

It is clear that when Obama said "you didn't build that," he is referring to the business itself, claiming that hard working Americans need the government. The [[Romney]] campaign, took that one sentence ("If you’ve got a business - you didn’t build that") and showed America what Obama is really about.
