In government, the term "pork", or "pork spending", is used to refer to often unnecessary spending on a particular Congressman's pet project(s) in his home district.  Though the practice is roundly criticized by many politicians and nearly all ordinary citizens, pork spending has steadily increased over the years (See [[Robert Byrd]]).
