added section on the Jagdtiger
Line 6: Line 6:
Initially the King Tiger was prone to malfunctions and reliability problems due to the lack of post production testing, as the tanks were sent immediately into [[combat]] after leaving the [[factory]]. Most of the problems were fixed by the end of 1944. However, due to production difficulties and Allied air [[bomb]]ing of Henschel warehouses, production numbers fell and there were not enough spare parts to keep the these tanks running. Between 489 and 492 were produced.

The Jagdtiger (Hunting Tiger) was a heavy tank destroyer based on the King Tiger tank. Germany in World War II had success using the chassis' of their existing Panzers as the basis for self-propelled weapons (SPWs). After the success of the ''JagdPanther'' tank destroyer, it was decided to mount the large PaK44 L/55 gun on a King Tiger chassis. The result was a monster heavy tank destroyer which could out-range any others. It had a crew of 6 men; power by a V12 gasoline engine. It had thick frontal armor, which was sloped. It weighted 70,000 tons making it slow and unwieldy. It had many of the same production and spare part issues as the King Tiger tank. . Only 77 were produced by the end of the war in Europe.
