The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is the virus that causes AIDS (Formerly known as Gay Related Immunodeficiency syndrome or "gay plague"). A September 2010 report of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) declared : "Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) represent approximately 2% of the US population, yet are the population most severely affected by HIV and are the only risk group in which new HIV infections have been increasing steadily since the early 1990s. In 2006, MSM accounted for more than half (53%) of all new HIV infections in the United States..." In August of 2009, LifeSiteNews reported: "An official with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced the CDC's estimate Monday that in the United States AIDS is fifty times more prevalent among men who have sex with men ('MSM') than the rest of the population."

The Virus infects and slowly kills human CD4+ helper T-Cells. With Treatment the progression of HIV infection to AIDS is slowed considerably, but may still progress. As T-cell counts fall a number of opportunistic infections can take hold and normally benign organisms can become deadly.

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is the virus that causes AIDS. It is a lentivirus, (a type of Retrovirus). There are 2 known versions of Human Immunodeficiency Virus, both originally from monkeys, and both extremely virulent. The virus causes AIDS by infecting vital cells in the immune system, specifically the T helper cells, macrophages, and dendritic cells, without which, the immune system is rendered non-functioning. The virus itself is believed to be originally Simian Immunodeficiency Virus, that has evolved to target humans effectively. The virus is originally from Africa, as bushmeat hunters were infected, and through transfer of bodily fluid to other people, eventually found itself in North America, and subsequently, the rest of the world.
