On Friday, May 10, 1996, Fischer was leading a group of climbers up [[Mount Everest]] when an intense snow storm trapped several of them very high on the mountain. Snow flurries were so intense that it became impossible to see and the cimbers were not able to descend, and Fischer perished on the mountain.

The snowstorm was one of the worst events ever to occur on Mt. Everest. Several books have been written about the storm and the ill-fated climb, including "The Climb: Tragic Ambitions on Everest" authored by a guide who lived through it, Anatoli Boukreev, and "Into thin Air" by Jon Krakauer.
