The '''United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit''' is an intermediate federal appellate court based in [[Boston]], Massachusetts. It hears appeals from federal district courts in [[Maine]], [[Massachusetts]], [[New Hampshire]], [[Puerto Rico]] and [[Rhode Island]]. Notable former judges who sat on the court include [[Stephen Breyer]] and [[David Souter]], both of whom were subsequently elevated to the Supreme Court.  The First Circuit has fewer judgeships than any other [[U.S. courts of appeal|U.S. court of appeals]].
