'''Peng Dehuai''' (1898 – 1974) was defense minister of [[China]] in 1954-1959. He was purged by [[Mao Zedong]] after he criticized the [[Great Leap Forward]] at the Lushan conference in 1959. His dismissal remained controversial for years. During the [[Cultural Revolution]], the previously popular play ''Hai Rui Dismissed from Office'' (1961) was condemned as a criticism of Peng's dismissal.
