This is what Satan did.  Actually, he told Eve to try it, who then gave it to Adam, who decided to also take of it.

In summary, if God hadn't allowed mankind to reap the consequences of their disobedience, then no lessons would be learned.  We live in the world today with all the problems because mankind knows "a better way".  God's way was right.  Actually, if they didn't eat from it, Adam and Eve would never have died.  Yet God allowed them to choose for themselves.  Sadly, they did it before they had children.  Therefore, ALL children born to them had this poisonous bite from this fruit in them, namely sin (missing the mark of how God expects people), so they all died...we all die.  If Adam and Eve had a child first, THEN ate from it, only the partaker of the fruit would have died, and the others would have learned the lesson "Don't drink bottles with poison written on it" as such...but Satan destroyed the first couple, and ruined ALL of God's physical creation that he made in his image.  Why did he not step in?  Because if he was going to continue to just buffer Adam and Eve into a life of strict robotics, that isn't life.  Free will is a gift.  Unfortunately, Adam's choice was so selfish that he affected all others.  God's allowing him to do it was in fact a loving provision to allow him to choose to do what he wanted...a bit like the son who's 30 who decides he wants to now go and take up a heroin habit.  Sure, off he goes, but not in my house...hence, out of the garden they were cast.  The difference here though is that the heroin abuser is able to stop, as they weren't created perfect thanks to Adam's sin.  God is love, and as much as God can be all knowing, he is also loving, and allows things that he chooses NOT to think about, but put's faith in us.  You, me...all of us.
