Here's a possibility, not an absolute.  Maybe Achan's sons would have grown up resentful and caused more damage.  Also, maybe Achan's sons were young men, not little tots.  A similar misunderstanding happens often with Abraham and Isaac, where people think of Isaac as being a baby or something, when he was actually carrying the wood, and he would have been a young man.  He voluntarily lay on the altar, not like a little baby.  This is a side point, but just something to think about.
