Asians are known for copying many things in the West. And the Korean communists leaders have been overweight, atheist slobs.  And medical science indicates that being overweight/obese causes brain impairment.

See: [[Physical and mental health related problems associated with obesity]] So the Korean communists may certainly have been intellectually lazy/ineffectual in terms of forming a substantially different ideology. But is possible. Maybe their culture and national pride caused them to make substantial changes to communist ideology, but I am skeptical. If I am not mistaken, although Maoism certainly existed, the Chinese communists still considered themselves to be Marxists-Leninists too.
