I am not clear how the Chicago Marathon is in keeping with the spirit of this article. That Marathon is managed and promoted by professional experts. They solicit sponsorship that funds prize money and travel expenses paid to invited elite runners that come from around the world (mostly from East Africa). It has been a long time since American runners have won that race. Perhaps a better example might be the Marine Corps Marathon which refuses to pay prize money, but still attracts good winning times. You said that Matt Cassel is a best of the public example. However, many evidence state otherwise. Win- loss
record for Cassel is 33-37, a pct of 0.471. One third of his wins came with the Patriots indicating that
he cannot function well in a system other than New England. When you adjust his numbers to exclude Patriots'
games, his record is 22- 32, a disappointing figure. Plus, Bill Belichik who coaches the Patriots is
regarded as an elite coach and is in the top 10 of all time coaches by wins- so was it Cassel or Belichik that
helped the Patriots go 11-5 in 2008 season. Clearly, it was Belichik. On the Kansas City Chiefs, he did not fare
as well. He was inefficient at games and many Chiefs fans hated him. Sure he got to the Pro Bowl, but many
horrible players, like Braylon Edwards, Cato June, Stephan Alexander, Elvis Grabac and Derek Anderson, have been
in the Pro Bowl. During part of the 2012 season, he and the Chiefs were only 2-14. Is that a "best of the public"
quarterback. Subsequently, he got traded to the Minnesota Vikings. Cassel is continuously not a good player
and should not be on this list.
