Devout atheist is an oxymoron. From what I have seen, most atheists are Darwinist/atheist poseurs.[http://questionevolution.blogspot.com/2012/10/evolutionist-posers-naive-evolutionists.html] And when so called atheists are cross-examined in debates, they usually back down to the position of agnosticism because atheism lacks proof and evidence that it is true.  [[User:Conservative|Conservative]] 23:09, 3 June 2014 (EDT)

My initial research would seem to indicate that strong Christian believers are more courageous than atheists see: [[Atheism and cowardice]] and information below.

Journal article: Are There Atheists in Foxholes? Combat Intensity and Religious Behavior
  −
  −
Abstract:
  −
  −
"After battle, the moral and mortality stresses influence different soldiers in different ways. Using two large-scale surveys of World War II veterans, this research investigates the impact of combat on religiosity. Study 1 shows that as combat became more frightening, the percentage of soldiers who reported praying rose from 42 to 72 %. Study 2 shows that 50 years later, many soldiers still exhibited religious behavior, but it varied by their war experience. Soldiers who faced heavy combat (vs. no combat) attended church 21 % more often if they claimed their war experience was negative, but those who claimed their experience was positive attended 26 % less often. The more a combat veteran disliked the war, the more religious they were 50 years later. While implications for counselors, clergy, support groups, and health practitioners are outlined, saying there are no atheists in foxholes may be less of an argument against atheism than it is against foxholes."[http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10943-013-9733-y]

Death anxiety increases atheists' unconscious belief in God: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/04/120402094322.htm  Battlefield is often chaotic and it has been shown in complex situations that unconscious thought often leads to better decisions for most people: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unconscious_thought_theory#The_deliberation-without-attention_effect  Brain prefers unconscious learning when under stress: http://aktuell.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/pm2012/pm00263.html.en and http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/31/learn-under-stress-brain_n_3678222.html

How do atheists cope with death: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ali-a-rizvi/atheists-death_b_4134439.html

People with lukewarm/moderate levels of Christian religious belief are likely not so effective at fighting fear of death. They get the fear of hell in many cases, but not much assurance they will not go there. Jesus said in the Book of Revelation that He will spit out the lukewarm.[http://biblehub.com/revelation/3-16.htm]

Below are some resources related to how the [[Atheism|atheist]] community performs using some of Garner's theory of multiple intelligences (see: [[Atheism and the theory of multiple intelligences]]):
  −
  −
1. [[Atheism and moral intelligence]] (related to bravery, altruism, etc). As far as altruism, see: [[Atheism and charity|Atheism and uncharitableness]]
  −
  −
2. [[Atheism and interpersonal intelligence]]. Esprit de corps - morale of a group.  Atheists appear to have lower social intelligence and thus would tend to reduce a units esprit de corps. Lower morale would likely increase fear on the battlefield.
  −
  −
3. [[Atheism and emotional/intrapersonal intelligence]]
  −
  −
4. [[Atheism and bodily-kinesthetic intelligence]] and [[Sports performance: Religious faith vs. atheism]]  Religion would seem to enhance athletic abilities and therefore military preparedness on the battlefield.  Being more prepared on the battlefield would likely reduce fear.
