Furthermore the interpretation in the linked article points out that it wasn't literally his father that the story was about, unless the son in the story was actually Jesus. Surely Jesus wasn't actually saying, "I used to be - I mean my friend used to be a screw-up when I - I mean he - left his dad's house ... long story short this unnamed friend of mine is an ex-gay."
