The 1997 Survivor Series in Montreal is infamous for the Montreal Screwjob.  At the time, the current WWE Champion, Bret Hart, was getting ready to leave WWE and go to WCW.  However, Hart did not want to drop the title to Shawn Michaels in Hart's native Canada.  Various possibilites were thrown around, including the match at Survivor Series ending in a no-contest, with Hart appearing on Raw the following night, forfeiting the title.  One of the main concerns was the fear that Hart would take the title with him to WCW, as a few years prior, Madusa, who wrestled under the name Alundra Blayze, took the Women's Championship with her to WCW, and threw the belt in the trash on an episode of Nitro.

The match happened as planned at the event.  However, when Michaels put Hart in the Sharpshooter, Hart's signature move, Vince McMahon, at ringside, called for the bell to be rang, and Shawn Michaels was declared the new champion.  When Hart realized what had happened, he spat in McMahon's face, tore up the ringside announce tables, and proceeded to spell out the letters WCW.
