The Federal Government has funded the building of two gravity wave detectors: The first to test the princple, and the second (upgrade) to actually perform measurements.  As a result of this work, on February 11, 2016, the LIGO team reported successful detection of gravitational waves caused by the merging of two black holes.<ref>https://www.ligo.caltech.edu/news/ligo20160211</ref>
