Today there are over 10,000 species of fish (actually, over 35,000 species of spiders), which is far more diversity than all land vertebrates.  This diversity pattern can be explained by the notion that fish, being aquatic, survived the [[Great Flood]], while many land vertebrates went extinct during this catastrophic event. <ref>http://www.christiananswers.net/q-aig/aig-c037.html</ref>
