When built, in the late 1970s/early 80s it was the longest single-span suspension bridge in the world. It crosses the River [[Humber]] between [[East Yorkshire]] and [[North Lincolnshire]], but carries little traffic and is mockingly known (to those on the Yorkshire side) as the 'bridge to nowhere'. Its construction had the political underpinning of a wish to unite the two banks of the Humber in a new county - [[Humberside]] - which was instituted in 1974 but lasted barely two decades before its abolition.
