Greece had been settled for many hundreds of years but the Greek Empire from approx. 750BC and was marked by the momentous Olympic Games (which are still with us to this day). The Greet empire begun to fall around 400 - 350BC after wars caused Athens, the dominant city state to lose much of its wealth. Then the Hellenistic age ended with the death of Alexander the Great in 323BC and the final nail in the coffin was Romans conquering Greece 146BC

My all-time favourite fable is the Ant and the Grasshopper. It extols the virtues of hard work, forbearance and forethought. It also rebukes idleness as seen, interestingly enough, in much of the Welfare State.
