Deem possesses a bachelor of science in [[biology|biological]] sciences from the University of Southern California and also has master of science in Medical Microbiology from California State University, Los Angeles. He works in the medical science research field (UC Davis, UCLA, and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center) and has been doing so since 1983. At the present time, he is researching gene expression and epigenetics of lamina propria and peripheral T cells in inflammatory bowel diseases.
