The Desert Eagle's high caliber and accuracy make it popular among hunters hunting large game, or as a defensive sidearm for hunters in areas with dangerous creatures like bears that a normal hunting weapon would not be powerful enough to kill. It is sometimes used by target shooters for its reputation of great accuracy due to its high quality design, and because an extended barrel version is available to aid performance. The barrel has a polygonal rifling rather than normal grooved rifling for extra accuracy and durability.
