A minuet or menuet is a French dance which flourished during the Baroque and Classical periods. Associated with the upper classes, it was typically set in a leisurely tempo and in 3/4 time. It was a staple movement in the Baroque dance suite, usually being written in pairs and performed da capo. In Vienna around the middle of the 18th century, it also formed part of the serenade. It later entered the symphony, first in the symphonies of the Mannheim School and of Joseph Haydn, in which it formed either the second or third movement. Later, in the music of Beethoven, this dance quickened in tempo and became known as a scherzo.
