The '''pineal gland''' is a central gland that rests squarely above the [[superior colliculous]]. [[Descartes]] believed that the soul communicated with the body by using the pineal gland to pump [[cerebrospinal fluid]]; however, this assertion was based on Descartes' mistaken belief that only humans had pineal glands. In fact, many animals do as well.
