No matter how much you spend on the speakers, it is the design of the enclosure that decides the ultimate "sound". This is the fun of it for a cabinet maker or woodworker - take a set of speakers from a pair of cabinets at the local "recycling centre" - read tip shop - that seem to have promise because of the weight of their magnets and their European extraction - and design cabinets around them to agree with the customer's taste in music and (of course) the decor.

The well-heeled Mrs, and it was usually the mistress of the house who hired me, had no problem with a set of VAF or similar speakers put into a decor friendly pair of boxes approved in that Company's specs, even if the timber was one of the wonderful local timbers available in these parts. It's when I tried to do the traditional sow's ear act with a tip-found pair of Sonys that the fun started. Th lady wanted to spend only so many hundred. I wanted to give her something that sounded something like her expectations without losing money.
