In the summer of 2015 he commandeered the Republican Clown Car, running on the hazy slogan of "Make America Hate Great Again".

Trump has engaged in many financial pursuits and estimates that his net worth is $10 billion.<ref>LoGiurato, Brett (July 25, 2015). [http://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-net-worth-2015-7 "We finally know a lot more about Donald Trump's 'massive' net worth"].  Business Insider website.</ref> He graduated from the New York Military Academy in 1964 and first attended college at [[Fordham University]] for two years before transferring to the more competitive [[University of Pennsylvania]] and then completing his studies at the prestigious Wharton School of Finance and Commerce. Trump has five children.

Nowadays, Trump markets himself as a Turbo-Wingnut: he's a climate change denier, is militantly pro-life, wants to toughen up America by building a Great Wall of Mexico, eliminating the Department of Education, thinks vaccines cause autism, yada yada. His Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, has more sensible policies on all these issues.

This is a substantial reversion of his earlier positions: Trump used to be pro-choice, pro-universal health care, and has donated more than half a million dollars to Democrats over the last two decades, including to the Wicked Witch of the East.

On June 16, 2015, he declared his candidacy for the Republican nomination in the [[2016 presidential election]].<ref>[http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2015/06/16/trump-announces-white-house-bid-joins-crowded-gop-field/ "Trump announces White House bid, joins crowded GOP field"] (June 16, 2015).  Fox News website/Politics. The front-runner in a record-breaking field of 17 [[Republican]] candidates, Trump announced that he did not anticipate "throwing punches" against his rivals in the first GOP debate.  Chiacu, Donna and Torbati, Yeganeh (August 2, 2015).  [http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/08/02/us-usa-election-debate-idUSKCN0Q70NI20150802 "Trump says won't be 'throwing punches' in U.S. Republican debate"].  But at the debate the [[Fox News Channel]]—particularly its [[feminist]] non-journalist [[Megyn Kelly]]—ambushed Trump with out-of-context quotations designed to smear him as somehow being anti-women.  This ignited a national controversy that lasted for days, and Trump called upon Kelly to apologize, which she refused to do.</ref> Unlike most other U.S presidential candidates, Trump sharply criticizes the media and talks about issues that no elected official dares touch. For example, Trump stands up against [[feminists]], unlike most politicians. In another example, in 2011 Trump persistently doubted whether [[Barack Obama]] had been born in the [[United States]], which caused Obama's approval ratings to drop below 40% until Obama finally caved in to Trump and produced what Obama claimed was his birth certificate. Trump then scoffed at Obama's conduct.

Despite his campaign mythologizing around his path to the presidency somehow "coming from outside the system" and being "free of cronyism" (imagining a Democrat-disgruntled working class being the ones to carry him into office), actual Trump supporters generally have above average incomes, typical of the same voter demographic that's always supported the GOP. In American terms, Trump is pretty much styling himself as the second coming of Andrew Jackson, complete with his plan for a new Trail of Tears. In turn, Trump actually appears to have secured the conspiracy theorist vote.

He's loud and flashy. He's brash and a bit of a douchebag. He's a li'l bit sexist and a li'l bit racist. He has the complexion of a bruised orange. That's the essence of his persona, and all that anybody really knows about this "blue-collar billionaire." For those who haven't swallowed his attempts at "branding" himself hook, line and sinker, it's obvious that Trump stopped being a real person sometime around the mid-1980s, around the time he developed an diet pill (amphetamine) addiction. Trump's tendency towards using the hyper-superlative and his severe disconnect from truth give him one true superlative: his is an unsurpassed bullshit artist, and make him an exceedingly difficult candidate for winning even a seemingly trivial libel lawsuit about his alleged net worth.

In February 2011, Trump announced that he is [[pro-life]].<ref>But on August 11, 2015, he indicated that he might support taxpayer funding of [[Planned Parenthood]] for its non-[[abortion]] activities (which builds its brand and funds its overhead).</ref> During the campaign for the Republican nomination, Trump called for women who had [[abortion]]s to be punished for doing so. He quickly flip-flopped on that statement, saying instead that doctors who provide abortions should be punished, not the women who have them.<ref>[https://www.donaldjtrump.com/press-releases/donald-j.-trump-statement-regarding-abortion Donald Trump press release]</ref> He later asserted that there should be no federal ban on abortions.<ref>[http://www.cnn.com/2016/04/01/politics/donald-trump-abortion-laws/index.html]"Trump says federal laws should not be changed to outlaw abortion," CNN.com, 1 April 2016.</ref>

Trump's central campaign theme has been to oppose [[illegal immigration]], and he enlisted Senator [[Jeff Sessions]] as an adviser on this issue.  As reported by [[Breitbart News Network|Breitbart]], "Sen. Sessions, Chairman of the Senate’s Immigration Subcommittee, is widely regarded as the gold standard on immigration. Sessions has also become the intellectual thought leader in the Republican Party on appealing to the blue collar voters who have been abandoned by their political leaders." <ref>Hahn, Julia (August 14, 2015). In the 2015 [[Value Voters Debate|Value Voters]] poll, Trump performed poorly, coming in fifth, indicating many [[Christian]] [[conservatives]] had not yet warmed up to him.<ref>Flores, Reena (September 26, 2015). [http://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-conservative-poll-donald-trump-could-not-win/ "The conservative poll Donald Trump could not win"].  CBSNews website.</ref>  Trump is a big supporter of [[gambling]], which most [[conservatives]] oppose.  But by 2016 Trump was winning more support from [[evangelical]]s than any other Republican candidate.
