Together with [[Ghent]] and [[Bruges]] it virtually controlled Flanders in the 13th century. The city was totally destroyed during [[World War I]] and rebuild afterwards. The Menenpoort (English: Menin Gate) is a memorial where the Last Post is sounded every evening for the fallen soldiers during that war and around the city there are many war cemeteries.<ref>https://www.britannica.com/place/Ypres</ref>
