Kohs was a pioneer in using Wikipedia for reputation management. He contacted Jimmy Wales who agreed that if Kohs posted proposed text on a talk page and other editors copied it into articles, that he would be within Wikipedia's standards of conduct. So, Kohs proceeded along the agreed upon plan. Wales then changed his mind, and "banished" Kohs permanently across the entire set of Wikipedia projects outside the normal disciplinary process without notice or due process.
Kohs assembled a panel discussion of paid editing for WikiConference USA and purchased a conference registration and a train ticket to travel to New York City. On the eve of the conference he was suddenly dis-invited without explanation.
On November 27, 2016, at a Wikiconference in San Diego, Kohs was confronted right in his face by a pack of Wikipedia goons. The mob included WMF employee James Alexander and the well-known Wikipedians Kirill Lokshin (User:Kirill_Lokshin), Sydney Poore (User:FloNight) and Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight (User:Rosiestep), the last of whom has a Wikipedia biography.<ref>https://storify.com/Strelnikov/how-to-get-thrown-out-of-a-wikipedia-conference-in-583505ed7e61c5053584567c</ref><ref>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZVPZNRuTyI</ref> See also [[Wikipedia police]].

Kohs has been a consistent critic of Mr. Wales' poor behavior and leadership.
