Sittingbourne is a charming English town eight miles (12.9 km) east of Gillingham in the county of [[Kent]] in the south east of the country.

The town is one of the most important historical locations of The Industrial Revolution, being the birthplace of Charles Rawlidge, butler to [[Isambard Kingdom Brunel]] (1806 - 1859). It was Rawlidge who became Brunel's confidant during many times of crisis, allowing Brunel to complete many projects he may otherwise have given up on. Brunel created and named The Rawlidge Viaduct in Lewisham, South East London in his honor after his butler's death in 1849.

Sittingbourne is also internationally famous for its shipbuilding. The area is noted for its unusual techniques and design, which culminated in the 1700s with the Lung Ship, a ship powered by bellows forcing air onto its own sails.
