While under [[Persia|Persian]] and [[Ottoman Empire|Ottoman]] dispute, the Persians claimed it in 1847.  In 1909, the [[Anglo-Persian Oil Company]] (later National Iranian Oil Company) constructed a pipeline refinery there.<ref name="Brit"/>
