'''Kevin Keegan''' was one of the most important [[soccer]] players in the history of the sport in [[England]], and was later manager of the national side.
He began his career at [[Scunthorpe]], but was at his peak during his years at [[Liverpool]] (1971-7) and [[Hamburg]] (1977-80). He surprised many by joining recently promoted [[Southampton]] in 1980, and helped them to high-place finishes in the First Division in 1981 and 1982. He then helped [[Newcastle United]] to achieve promotion to the First Division.
He played only a few minutes of World Cup football, however - England did not qualify in 1974 or 1978, and he had barely recovered from injury in time to come on as a substitute in their last game of the 1982 World Cup.
His managerial career was initially successful, once more helping Newcastle into the top flight, and a second place finish in 1996. His tenure as England manager was disappointing, however, and he resigned after a 1-0 defeat by Germany in a world cup qualifier.
