Shandong (''Shantung'' in Wade-Giles transliteration) is a province of eastern [[China]], taking the form of a large peninsula protruding into the [[East China Sea]] and [[Bohai]] Gulf. The provincial capital is [[Jinan]]; other major centres are [[Qingdao]] (Tsingtao, a German territory between 1898 and 1914 and subsequently Japanese-occupied) , [[Yantai]] (known as Chefoo, a summer base for the US China squadron), and [[Weihai]] (formerly Weihaiwei, a British leased territory between 1898 and 1930).
