The '''Crystal radio''', or Crystal set, is an early type of radio receiver.  It was devised by U.S. radio pioneer Greenleaf Whittier Pickard about 1900 and patented by him in 1906.  G.W. Pickard's great-uncle was the anti-slavery campaigner John Greenleaf Whittier.
