The minor [[planet]] Pluto, named for the Roman god of the Underworld, was discovered in 1930 by [[American]] astronomer [[Clyde Tombaugh]].  In 2006, the International Astronomers Union demoted Pluto from the status of a planet to that of a minor planet, although this was controversial because the organization has no accountability to the American public, who don't understand what the purpose of the IAU was in 'demoting' Pluto.
