Hurston was born January 7, 1891 in Notasulga, Alabama.<ref>http://www.biography.com/people/zora-neale-hurston-9347659</ref> She grew up in the first offically all-black town of Eatonville, Florida, the daughter of a Baptist preacher, excelled in classes at Howard University, and moved to New York City in the 1920s to attend the Harlem Renaissance.<ref>http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/zora-neale-hurston-is-born</ref> She received a B.A. from Barnard College there, and in 1925, began writing with the publication of her short story, "Spunk."<ref>http://www.blackpast.org/aah/hurston-zora-neale-1891-1960</ref> She gathered folktales from the South and the Caribbean and published them in ''Mules and Men''.
